The profit and loss formula

A crypto trade has two sides, and fees apply to both. The money you commit is cost = buy price × quantity × (1 + fee%), because the exchange adds its fee on top of your purchase. The money you get back is proceeds = sell price × quantity × (1 − fee%), since the fee is skimmed off the sale. Your net result is simply profit = proceeds − cost, and the percentage return is profit ÷ cost × 100. A positive number is a gain and a negative number is a loss. Because quantity multiplies both sides equally, doubling your position doubles the absolute profit or loss while leaving the percentage return unchanged — the percentage depends only on prices and fees, not on how many coins you hold.

Why fees matter so much

Crypto fees look small per trade but compound against you because they hit both entry and exit. A 0.2% fee on each side removes roughly 0.4% of a round trip before price movement is even considered, and high-frequency trading multiplies that drag quickly. The calculator separates your total invested (including the buy fee) from your total received (after the sell fee) so you can see exactly how much the exchange took. To break even, the sell price must rise enough to cover both fees, not just match your buy price. Lowering the fee input to zero shows the gross result, making it easy to measure the precise cost of trading on a given platform.

Important limitations

This is a single-trade calculator that assumes one buy and one matching sell at fixed prices. It does not model dollar-cost averaging across multiple entries, partial sells, staking rewards, network or gas fees separate from the exchange fee, or spreads between bid and ask. It also does not handle taxes, which can be significant on crypto gains depending on your jurisdiction and holding period. Prices are whatever you type — there is no live market feed — so it works in any currency and stays completely private. Everything runs locally in your browser, making it a quick way to check a scenario, but confirm real figures against your exchange statement.

Frequently asked questions

What formula is used?
Cost = buy price × quantity × (1 + fee%). Proceeds = sell price × quantity × (1 − fee%). Profit = proceeds − cost, and return% = profit ÷ cost × 100.
How are fees applied?
The fee percentage is charged on both sides: it raises your buy cost and lowers your sell proceeds, which is how most exchanges take a cut on each trade.
Does it support any coin?
Yes. Quantity and prices are just numbers, so it works for any cryptocurrency, token or even fractional amounts in any currency.
Are live coin prices fetched?
No. There are no external APIs or live market data — enter your own buy and sell prices.
